This lovely little golden owl has a lovely little story to go with it, about a lovely girl who sings lovely songs, who you should go and see perform, should the opportunity arise. A couple weeks ago my friend Chris Macowski sent a tip about a singer called Jamie Bendell, who had an EP out called “Waiting For Owls.” Her voice is fantastic, so I hope to go see one of her upcoming NYC shows (Cameo Gallery 3/26 at 8pm, The Living Room 4/1 at 7:30pm, Sullivan Hall 4/28 at 7:30). If you’re clever and like nice music, you’ll do the same.
I asked Jamie how she decided on her album name, and this is what she wrote:
The story of how I fell in love with owls goes something like this:
Two years ago, I was preparing to go on a study abroad program to Torino, Italy. It was a brand new program for my university and I was essentially the guinea pig. I was excited, but kind of nervous as well.
One day, I was browsing in a store and saw this awesome necklace. It was a long chain with a gold owl charm. I decided it was symbolic and that I would buy the necklace as a reminder to be mature, wise, and true to myself throughout my time in Torino. I wore it almost every day while I was there.
When I came back to New York, I continued wearing the necklace every day. It became such a part of me, this reminder of what I’d accomplished, that I’ve become mildly obsessed with looking for cool owl pieces.
So why did I name my first EP “Waiting For Owls”…
I’m now back up in New York from after graduating from school in Atlanta. I’m waiting for that owl again, waiting to be secure with myself, and waiting to find knowledge, or a path that will ultimately lead to success for my music.
